We have teamed up with one of our community partners to share their knowledge through our blog with you. One of those partners is realtor Angie Miller of The Real Estate Group who shares her tips on which home projects you should work on this Fall to prepare for Winter.
As a realtor, I not only think about helping people buy or sell homes, but also about the maintenance and upkeep of their most expensive investment!
With each season change there are certain house “chores” to put on the to-do list. Seasonal checks and maintenance ensure that (hopefully) no major unexpected expenses will sneak up on you—you will either avoid them happening at all or will be able to plan and save for when the time comes.
As fall approaches, I suggest you review these areas in your home and address those that are necessary…before Old Man Winter joins us:
1. Check around your entryways (front door, back door, garage entry and service doors) and windows for any chipping or peeling paint. The fall weather is a great time to tackle a large task like sanding and repainting these areas—never fun, but at least it’s not too hot!
2. Clean those gutters…again…and one final time after the leaves have finished falling.
3. Caulk entryways and windows to avoid drafts and get a head start on keeping the winter utility bills down.
4. If you have an asphalt driveway, you’ll want to apply a sealer before any snow piles on to keep cracking at bay.
5. Reverse ceiling fans to utilize the upward draft and redistribute the warm air.
6. Cover your outdoor AC unit to protect it from the harsh weather. They sell actual covers or you can just secure a tarp around it with a bungee cord.
7. Detach hoses from spigots and put a protective cover over your spigots. Take it from me…it only takes one year of forgetting to undo the hose and flooding the basement to never forget to do this each fall!
