Before we begin discussing why you might want use dual-authentication, let’s talk about what this term means.
What is Dual-Authentication?
Dual authentication, also known as two factor authentication, is a system that requires two methods of confirming your identity. This can include:
1. Something you know – A password, username, pin code or an answer to a secret question.
2. Something you have – A physical device such as a smartphone, a key fob or a USB drive.
3. Something you are – A fingerprint ID, retina scan, DNA or voice recognition.
Why is Dual-Authentication Important?
This authentication system makes it more difficult for an attacker to obtain your information and it reduces the risk of fraud. Because the security of your banking information is a top priority to Marine Bank, we feel dual-authentication is a must for your digital banking.
Though you may be tempted to think this as an unnecessary extra step as you login to your account, this extra step decreases the chance that you will have to deal with someone stealing your information. To make dual-authentication easier for you, we’ve developed Device Fingerprinting. This means your information such as hardware, browser and operating systems are remembered. However, if a hacker attempts to login to your account from another system or if there are changes to your system, it will not be recognized requiring dual-authentication.
