How to Master Mental Toughness

Grit. A quality that leads people to accomplish far more than many thought possible. Oftentimes being mentally tough ranks higher in the pursuit of success than both intelligence and strength. As a marathon runner reaches their last few miles or as a cadet nears the end of training, there is a little voice inside that rears its ugly head.


The difference between success and failure is what one does with that little voice.


We’ve all heard the phrase “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!” Related to those who have mental toughness, I would rephrase it to say “When the going gets tough, the tough think positive thoughts!” In many cases the optimist has an advantage in this particular area, but the good news is, anyone can train themselves to gain the habits it takes to become a champ in mental toughness.


Here are a few ways you can increase your mental toughness:


1. Focus

Visualize yourself accomplishing the goals you’ve set and don’t give in to temptation, even when it’s REALLY difficult. If you make a mistake, know that it’s alright, but never make excuses for yourself. Get right back on track.

2. Motivation

What motivates you to want to succeed? Know what drives you to want to persevere in the midst of difficult moments and remind yourself of it often.

3. Specific Goals

Set measurable goals for yourself. Think S.M.A.R.T. Your goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

4. Determination

There will be moments you have obstacles that feel too big to overcome, but giving up shouldn’t be an option. Overcome your fears, find creative ways around walls that stand in your way, and never wait on anyone else to push you forward. This is your story and you have control of the ending.


Being mentally tough will take you to the next level at work and at home. Start applying the habits above to your daily life and you will find you’re able to reach the goals you put in front of yourself. As the great Babe Ruth once said, “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” It takes practice, persistence and the ability to out-talk that negative little voice with some positive thoughts!
